Price Down, Shares Up
The price looks 9.09% lower, but you now own 100 more shares. Your shares are worth about ৳1,00,000.00 afterwards, against ৳1,00,000.00 before. The company has paid you from its own value, so a lower price is expected. Your total cost stays the same, spread over more shares, so your cost price per share falls.
How the Adjustment Works
1
Bonus Shares Lower the Price
Adjusted price = price ÷ (1 + bonus %). With a 10% bonus, ৳100 becomes about ৳90.91.
2
Cash Dividends Lower It Too
The cash dividend per share is taken off the price first. A ৳1 cash dividend takes ৳1 off.
3
Your Cost Price Falls
Total cost ÷ new number of shares. Cost of ৳90 on 1,000 shares is ৳90,000. After a 10% bonus, that is spread over 1,100 shares: about ৳81.82 each.
Example: 1,000 shares at ৳100 are worth ৳1,00,000. After a 10% bonus, you own 1,100 shares at about ৳90.91. That is still about ৳1,00,000.
Record Date
Each company sets a record date. Shares you buy before it are eligible for the dividend. You can sell the day after the record date and still receive the dividend.
Why did my share price fall after the record date?
After a bonus or cash dividend, the exchange adjusts the share price. A bonus issue creates more shares, so each share is worth less. For example, a 10% bonus turns a ৳100 price into about ৳90.91.
Did I lose money when the price was adjusted?
No. You own more shares at a lower price, so the value of your holding stays about the same. The adjustment on its own does not change your wealth. Prices still move up and down afterwards.
If I sell the day after the record date, do I still get the dividend?
Yes. Eligibility depends on the shares you hold on the record date, so you can sell the day after and still receive the dividend.
What if my bonus is less than one whole share?
The DSE has no fractional shares, so a fraction of a share is not issued. For example, 2 shares with a 10% bonus is 0.2 of a share, so you receive no bonus shares. The company pays cash for the fraction instead. Your share price still adjusts on the record date.
What happens to my cost price after a bonus?
Your total cost does not change, but it is spread over more shares, so your cost price per share falls. Total cost ÷ new number of shares gives the new figure.
Is there tax on bonus shares?
No. There is no tax on bonus shares. Tax is deducted from cash dividends, which the Dividend Calculator covers.
Is the price this calculator shows exact?
It is an estimate. The Dhaka Stock Exchange sets the actual adjusted price on the record date, and rounding can make it differ slightly.
